Professor Andrew Smith (51). Andrew is Professor of Transport Performance and Economics at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds where he leads the Institute’s Rail Research Theme. His research is focused on: (1) rail infrastructure access pricing and marginal cost research; (2) studying the impact of international rail reforms and regulatory practice on economic efficiency; (3) cost and efficiency modelling, with particular focus on rail transport but also covering other transport modes (airports; roads; bus) and utilities (water and energy); and (4) modelling the economic impact of rail technology innovations. Andrew is Associate Editor of the Journal of Transport Economics and Policy and member of the Executive Committee of the International Transportation Economics Association (ITEA). Andrew is currently leading a strategic partnership with SNCF Reseau focused on better understanding the marginal cost of rail maintenance and renewal costs.

Yann Bezin is Professor of Railway Dynamics at the University of Huddersfield (HUD) and Head of Research of the Institute of Railway Research (IRR). He has over 20 years experience in vehicle-track interaction, wheel-rail contact mechanics and track system engineering. He obtained his PhD in 2008 on the topic of developing flexible track system modelling capabilities within railway multibody systems software. He was co-investigator of UK EPSRC Grant Programme ‘Track to the Future’ (EP/M025276/1), leading research on switches and crossings (S&C), developing numerical and field monitoring solutions to validate their performance. Principal investigator in a series of EU projects (Capacity4Rail, In2Rail, In2Track and In2Track2), investigating and developing design solutions to prevent rail damage in S&C. He recently led an international benchmark on the simulation of railway vehicles in S&C.

Dr. Olof Kristofer Odolinski (37). One-year Master of Political Science and one-year Master of Economics at Linköping University (2009 and 2010). Research assistant (2010–2016) at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). Obtained a PhD in Economics at Örebro University in 2016 and continued working as a Research Fellow at VTI. Since 2020, a Research Fellow in Railway Economics at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds.

Associate Professor Carlos Casanueva (39), Master (2005) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (2010) at the University of Navarra. Joined KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm late 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher where he obtained the position of Assistant Professor in Rail Vehicle Technology in 2014 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018. He has been part of the leadership team at the Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design since 2014 where he is nowadays deputy director, and is since 2018 Program Responsible for the International Master program in Railway Engineering at KTH, in collaboration with UIUC in the US.
